Corriere Vinicolo, the leading weekly publication for wine professionals focusing on the market and production recently published a legal analysis on consortia and the management of wine tourism, authored by our senior associate, Stefano Vergano. This follows the European Union’s approval of Regulation (EU) No 471/2026, also known as the new Wine Package.
This new European regulation empowers Member States to allocate CAP resources directly to wine protection consortia, enabling them to spearhead the strategic revival of wine tourism in response to the decline in wine consumption.
This is a significant development, establishing the consortia as key players in wine tourism activities and giving them a new role as collectors of financial resources. In order to make full use of these funds, however, the sector must strengthen its internal capabilities and harmonise Italy’s fragmented legislation. One interesting practical solution is the creation of regional coordination bodies involving several consortia, based on a model that has already been successfully trialled in Piedmont.
